Helmets- A Vital Part Of Cricket Clothing

Clothing in any physical game is very important because of the fact that despite of having skill, talent and form, the sport person can be penalised or injured in his / her game due to some unforced errors with no fault involved. There are many instances in cricket where cricketers had to pay the price of neglecting their cricket clothing

A batsman has to wear a lot of guards and gears to protect his/her body. Some gears are also used to optimise overall performance of the player like customized batting gloves or helmets. But there are some instances in the history of cricket where batsmen has paid penalty because their gear failed them or they neglected its importance. There was a time when batsman used to wear hats and caps during batting, at that time helmet was not used to protect their heads. Fast bowling was faced with no protection for the head at all after some very unfortunate incidences people realised that a cricket helmet must form a vital part of the cricket kit.

Legend Sunil Gavaskar said that “If a batter can’t protect his head how will he protect his cricket stumps?” He played all his cricket without helmet facing serious fast bowlers all across the globe .But nowadays even in under 10 cricket , kids are not allowed inside nets without helmet which brings us to a conclusion that accidents with players like Phillip hughes , Raman Lamba,  Nari Contractor and many more has happened despite of there skills, talent or class. So, what one can do to prevent these type of accidents from his/her end is to always wear proper cricket clothing whenever they are in action, be it a practice session or an international match because all it takes is a fraction of a second to provide a lethal delivery its literal meaning.

Some people believe that bowlers have been suppressed in many ways like shortening of boundaries, limited number of bouncers allowed per over, good quality of bats, fielding restrictions and helmets for batsmen which provide them confidence of going for shots like reverse sweep or scoops. Every reason is justifiable but one just can not say that to improve the odds helmets should not be used because its just a game and no one wants to witness a blood stained pitch at the end of the day.
